Description
WALKER'S "Excelsior" III MARINE SHIP-LOG IN BOX MADE IN ENGLAND BRASS LOGThe Ship-log was made in England - Best guess for when it was produced - the 1920s or 30s. Has original contents: a brass ships-log, 2 mounting shoes, 1 rotor (with rope and hardware),
a container of oil, a beautiful marine hourglass, several pieces of paperwork & charts, and more. The box is in good shape and is made of wood. The set is heavy but I will provide free shipping in the USA.
This would make an amazing addition to any nautical collection or a wonderful gift!
The Excelsior Ship Log is a much sought after piece of naval history. With a set like this, a captain could gauge his speed and distance traveled over time.
Thomas Walker patented his first Walker log in 1861, patenting the A1 Harpoon Log two years later. His son, Thomas Ferdinand Walker, patented in 1897 the Cherub log, providing a far more accurate reading. Formally completed in 1912, Thomas Walker & Son LLC installed their headquarters in Oxford Street in Birmingham, and the business was continued by the grandson of Thomas Walker, Thomas Sydney Walker.
