Description
1946 Vintage Sextant U.S. Maritime Commission Roth Bros.Navigational devices such as this type were used to determine a ship's position from the observation of the heavenly bodies.
This came off of the P & T Pathfinder.
The Pathfinder was previously the USS DuPage and served during WWII in the Pacific. It received Six Battle Stars, the most for its type of ship in the Pacific Fleet.

This Sextant has been in the family for decades.
The original Collimation Certificate is still affixed to the inside of the case lid (under plexiglass).
It reads:
"Roth Bros. Sextant
Serial No. 651
Manufactured by Roth Bros. Chronometer Co.
106 East 23rd Street
New York 10, N.Y.
Manufactured for U.S. Maritime Commission
Magnification: 3X
True Field: 6 1/2°
Apparent Field: 19 1/2°
Date: 4-25-1946"
The Sextant is housed in its original 13" x 11½" x 6" mahogany case with brass and steel hardware.
The -5° to 145° scale is stamped with serial number 651 and the Trademark M (circled).
This Roth Bros. Sextant & Case are both in very good condition. There is one flaw on the corner of the sextant mirror, which I have pointed out in one of the pictures (see pen pointing). Also some marking on the finish near the circled "M".
Box has some faded spots and scratches/scuffs on the outside, but is sound.
Stamped on the Sextant's 6" Radial Arm is "U.S. Maritime Commission, Roth Bros. Chronometer Co. New York, U.S.A.".
This is a great nautical artifact and piece of U.S. Maritime history. 1946 - Just after WWII.
