Victorian Childs Transfer Printed Sepia Brown 2pc Tea Set LITTLE MAY with APRON OF EGGS Charles Allerton & Sons Staffordshire England c. 1890This antique children's transferware cup and saucer set dates to 1890. Transfer printed in sepia brown, t he rounded cup stands 2 1/4" tall and the saucer measures about 5 1/8" in diameter. The set was made by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. The influence of the Aesthetic movement on the pattern designs captures the Victorian love of nature and the exotic. The set was originally part of a complete childs tea set.The set depicts a homely little farm girl named May or Mae standing in front of farmhouse wearing a dress, a floppy hat, and an apron. She is holding up the front of her apron which appears to be filled with eggs. An endearing scene of country life, one of May's socks is falling down and she has a subtle smile on her face! The central image is framed by an aesthetic background of flowers and a floral leaf border.
