Steam donkeys are steam engines with integrated gearing and controls used to haul and load logs and other heavy equipment at logging sites, by means of heavy winched steel cables. These engines were in common use from the late 1800's through the early 20th century. Most were supplanted by diesel power during the late 1920's and were often simply abandoned in the woods to rot and rust where they were last used.
