The dragonfly, snown as
seirei
or
kachimushi
(insect of victory) was noted for flying forward and never retreating and thus associated with the heroic samurai spirit. Raden inlay with iridiscent mother-of-pearl shell evoke the movement of the shu-urushi (red lacquer) dragonflies.
