Description
Namiki 2020 Limited Edition Emperor Shijin Fountain PenThe newest addition to the Namiki Collection is a limited edition Emperor called Shijin. The exceptional artwork featured on this fountain pen was designed by KOKKOKAI master Maki-e artisan, Masaru Hayashi. It takes about 1 year to expertly handcraft each Shijin pen. There are only 99 available worldwide. The barrel artwork was designed using the traditional Maki-e lacquer work, Chinkin gold and silver inlay techniques, and stunning mother-of-pearl Raden elements.
The Shijin has a classical Emperor vest-type body style and is enhanced with a traditional 18-karat gold, rhodium plated nib featuring the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji, available in Medium or Broad nib sizes. The word “Shijin” translates into English as “Four Gods” and each God is represented on the pen barrel and cap by a mythical creature. These creatures are the guardians of the four cardinal directions, are deeply tied to the principles of Feng Shu, and represent each one of the classical Chinese elements (water, fire, wood, and metal) through colors.
• Genbu (玄武), is a sacred creature that serves as the guardian of the North, the Master of Water. Genbu is referred to as the “Black Warrior” and symbolized by the deepest shade of black. This creature is depicted as a long-legged turtle with a snake entwined around the turtle shell. Genbu is considered a symbol of longevity and prosperity because it can control life and travel back and forth between the Underworld and Earth. The Shijin barrel showcases Genbu on the top of the pen cap to reinforce the association with the Northern domain.
• Suzaku (朱雀), is a striking Phoenix with 5 gorgeous shades of red and gold in the wings. This brilliant, fabled bird is guardian of the South, the Master of Fire, and is connected to shades of blazing red. Suzaku is seen as a symbol of beauty and intelligence who brings happiness to Earth by burning evil spirits in its flames. The Phoenix is located on the bottom of the fountain pen barrel, rising from energetic flames, to reinforce the association with the Southern domain
• Seiryu (青龍), is a revered guardian of the East, the Master of Wood, and is symbolized by a vibrant teal color. Seiryu is characterized as a mighty dragon, complete with glorious antlers and a spectacular serpent-like body. Seiryu is said to have the power to bring forth rain to product bountiful crops. This dragon is also considered a symbol of wealth and believed to attract good fortune and success. Seiryu is placed on the right side of the cap to reinforce the association with the Eastern domain, beneath Genbu.
• Byakko (白虎), is the most unique representation of a God in the four elements, because Byakko is modeled after a non-mythical creature, a tiger. This tiger, however, is exceptional because it has survived for over 500 years and evolved to attain spiritual powers. Byakko is the guardian of the West, the Master of Metal, and is symbolized by a sparkling white. Byakko is said to be an incarnation of the Moon Goddess and is believed to bestow fertility on couples and ensure a safe childbirth. The tiger is featured on to the left, in the middle of the pen barrel, above Suzaku, to reinforce the association with the Western domain.
The four Gods are strategically placed on the body of the pen, representing their cardinal direction and appear to dance around a purposefully placed directional compass. Each cardinal direction reflects the symbolic color of the coordinating Shijin: black for the north, fiery red for the south, gorgeous teal for the east, and a brilliant white for the west.
Each of the 99 Shijin fountain pens is presented in a limited edition, jet black case with a serial plate, and is accompanied by a limited edition bottle of black ink. The cap of the ink bottle is adorned with a compass which matches the design on the fountain pen barrel.
