We see the bust of a young woman cut into the shell of a sea snail. The finely engraved relief of the clamshell shows the graceful lady in profile to the right with her hair pinned up and adorned with ivy tendrils. The sitter in this Victorian cameo is Fides, the personification of loving fidelity. As firmly as ivy climbs a wall and does not let go again, loyalty binds two people together - that is why ivy is an attribute of the Fides depicted here. The painter Philip Hermogenes Calderon also associated this Victorian symbolic language in his painting
"Broken Vows" (1856)
, in which he portrayed a true lover in front of a wall overgrown with ivy. The gem is set in 14-carat gold and can be worn as a brooch or pendant. It is very well preserved and came to us from the west of Germany. The typical late Victorian piece of jewelry celebrates true love and is therefore suitable, for example, as a gift for a wedding day.
