    DESCRIPTION:
This is a nice antique large (66 inches wide) wooden ships wheel that has been custom made into a table. The ship's wheel is easily removable from the table base and it could be used as a wheel or as a table base for your display purpose. The ship's wheel is made of wood with brass screws, a brass center portion and a Brass manufacturer's tag for American Engineering of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (see photos). The item is old and the family history is that it was from a sailing ship called the Carmella and the husband (descendant of the original ship owner) had a craftsman make the base so he could display the table (see photos and verify this information on your own). The ships wheel is large and it merely sits onto the brass mount at the top of the table base (see photos). This is a large ships wheel and as a table the top is made to turn freely. The table comes apart into a few pieces for easier transport. It is American in origin. The item came from a nice estate (see photos and decide the age, the origin and the maker). The item has some scratches, scuffs, finish losses and wear from age and handling (see photos and / or written description for the condition of this item). This ships wheel in total measures about 5 feet 6 inches wide. As a table the item measures about 1 foot 7 inches high. This item would be nice to add to your collection.
Here is some information I have from the estate of the former owners of the wheel and the ship's they owned. The wheel is from one of these ship's likely the Carmella according to the family

They sailed in the late 1800s or early 1900s out of Port Jefferson, NY and I think they were registered in the US and they traded Internationally.
One of the ships Captain's was named Edward Post Bayles (family memory) and they said there is a statue of him at the dock of Port Jefferson where the ferry to Connecticut goes now.
The ship's wheel is from one of those ships. The wheel was handed down from father to son for many generations. The ships wheel is antique and it was made into a table 40 + years ago.
The ships sailed through Charleston, SC south through Venezuela, Cuba and South America in the late 1800s's through the 1940s. The seaport they sailed out of was Port Jefferson.
