    Description

Antique Spencer, Browning & Rust Sextant/Octant with Fan Shaped Carrying Box Labeled Inside
This is a brass, ebony & ? antique Sextant/Octant (I am not sure which) made by the well known British
maker Spencer, Browning & Rust of London who was in business from 1784 - 1840. The business
continued under the name of Spencer, Browning & Co. which ceased in 1870.
The Spencer, Browning & Rust Co. had and early dividing machine and inscribed arcs for others, this
instrument in the center of the degrees scale between 50 and 55 degrees is inscribed “SBR” identifying
it was engraved and made by Spencer, Browning & Rust of London.
The instrument is in very nice condition but is missing the cross - bar name plate, the back plate for notation
and the peep hole attachment. It has discoloration on the scales with a small line/separation on the vernier
scale. The flat brass index arm is 12” long. The index arm arc degree scale measures from minus 2 degrees
to 107 degrees. The Vernier scale 0 – 20 arc minutes.
I have not cleaned the lenses and the clear stationary one has a chip in upper left hand corner.
There is no provision for a handle on this instrument which marks it as a transitional piece between an
    octant and a sextant.
The instrument measures approximately 12"  by 10" widest point.
The fan shaped box made of mahogany is solid but has chips, scuffs, missing small pieces, scratches
and a piece of the bottom missing.
It has two brass eye latches and a lock that I do not have a key for. It has the original old finish and
a couple of new tack holes.
It has a paper Spencer & Browning Label and a Buren & ?ostigan paper label over and older paper label,
they are stuck together and should not be removed and left in the original condition.
I assume the Buren & ?ostigan was a resale label.
The photos are a very integral part of this description so please view them all.
