    Description

Up for auction is a early wooden Josiah N. King Shipwrights Coffin Plane used for making planking. The coffin style plane was made by the plane maker from New York circa 1858. The beautiful solid wood beech plane is approximately 8 3/8 inches in length with rounded bottom sole for hollowing and rounding. It’s obvious by appearance that the wood retains its original finish and has been well preserved.  It’s in excellent condition for it’s age and retains its original 2 1/4 inch radius steel cutter. The steel cutter also has early makers marks,” W.Butcher warranted Cast Steel with center Arrow logo“. Butcher was producing cast steel irons from 1816 to 1867. Information about J. King planemaker can be found on page 221 in the reference book, “Makers of American Wooden Planes “ by Emil & Martyl Pollak. Josiah King a prolific plane maker setup shop in New York as early as 1835 with his two sons and moved to 373 Bowery street in 1858. The marked tool is uncommon and considered a one star by collectors
