Description
EARLY 19TH CENTURY HADLEY STYLEOCTANT FOR PARTS OR RESTORATION
Available for purchase is an early 19th-century Hadley-style octant.
It is not complete and is being sold for parts or restoration.
Also known as a reflecting quadrant, the octant is an early measuring instrument primarily used for navigation. The bone nameplate is missing, so the manufacturer is unknown. It was most likely made in England some time between 1820 and 1850, possibly even earlier. I've read that the "three mirror" or Hadley-style octants generally date from this period.
This octant has a nice ebony frame and a heavy brass index arm. The frame measures about 13 1/4" in the vertical direction and 11 1/2" wide. Both of the horizon glass mirrors are intact, although the silvering has corroded, so they are no longer reflective. The sunshades are also intact. The peep sight, back sight, and index mirror are missing, as well as the bone graduating arc. One of the feet and several other pieces on the back side are also missing. It's possible that additional pieces are missing, as I don't know much about octants, other than what I've read online. I purchased octant at a recent estate sale.
Condition of this antique octant is INCOMPLETE. As I mentioned previously, you are buying it for parts or restoration. I've done my best to describe what you are getting, but please take a close look at the many photos I've provided to see for yourself.
If you collect antique navigation devices, don't miss your opportunity to purchase this offering. Even in this incomplete condition, this interesting instrument has many useful parts and is worthy of restoration. My BUY IT NOW price of only 9 is a bargain. So buy this octant now before someone else beats you to the deal!
