In 1974, Carter announced his candidacy for president and was nominated on the first ballot at the Democratic National Convention. In the 1977 election, Jimmy Carter defeated President Gerald Ford.
    As president, Carter worked hard to improve the nation's economy and showed a strong commitment to human rights. On December 10, 2002, Jimmy Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to advance democracy.
