LIBERIA, THE OTHER U.S. COLONY. OFFICIALLY ESTABLISHED AS A REPRESENTATIVE REPUBLIC IN 1846 SUPPORTED BY AND PATTERNED AFTER THE U.S.A. THE LIBERIAN COLONY WON THEIR FREEDOM AND ESTABLISHED THEIR SOVEREIGNTY AFTER MANY BATTLES AND MUCH BLOODSHED. THEIR FLAG IS RED WHITE AND BLUE WITH ONE SINGLE WHITE STAR. U.S. PRESIDENT JAMES MONROE MADE THIS POSSIBLE AS WELL AS MANY OTHER U.S.A. FREEDOM PATRIOTS WHO WANTED TO SEE THE FREED SLAVES HAVE A PLACE TO RETURN TO THAT THEY COULD TRULY CALL HOME IN THEIR NATIVE LAND OF AFRICA.
PRESIDENT U.S. GRANT GOT INVOLVED IN DEFENDING LIBERIA IN THE 1870's, SENDING A WAR SHIP:
In 1875, the
USS Alaska
was dispatched by President Ulysses S. Grant to Liberia, after Liberian troops lost a series of battles to Grebo warriors. A war broke out among a confederation of Grebo peoples in 1875. The Liberian Government
asked the United States to serve as mediator. In response, a United States emissary visited the Grebo kingdom and the Liberian republic and dispatched the naval ship to assist the Liberian government in settling the conflict.
THE OTHER U.S. COLONY THAT TODAY SENDS ITS OWN TROOPS TO ACT AS PEACE-KEEPERS.
