Simms. London, 1834. Published by the author and including a four page, priced catalog of Instruments, Apparatus and Books available from the firm of the author’s father “Troughton and Simms” of London.
    This exceptionally rare and original, Instrument subject Volume and Catalog measures approx. 5 3/4” by 9” and contains 108 pages plus a four page fully priced catalog for “Troughton and Simms” – manufactures of Mathematical, surveying and Astronomical Instruments.. The Volume is complete and retains the front and free endpapers as well as the half-title.
    This informative work by Frederick Simms details the use of the Land Chain, Surveying Cross, Prismatic Compass, Theodolite, Spirit Level, Sextant, Transit Instrument, and others. Simms (1803-1865), a surveyor and civil engineer of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, and formerly with the Ordnance Survey was the son of William Simms (d.1860) scientific instrument maker with Edward Troughton, joined the Southern Eastern Railway Company as resident engineer in 1836, and oversaw the construction of the Bletchingley and Saltwood tunnels.
    This rare and original, Scientific Instrument Treatise and catalog is bound in its original, ¼ leather and plain paper covered boards with a label affixed to the front cover that features the title of the work. The binding is intact and tight but lacks the spine cover and exhibits edge wear. The interior pages are complete, tight and generally well preserved with scattered foxing and some light toning.
